About Me

My photo
Pam at Dory's Cafe
I opened Dory's Cafe in November 2007. I had worked as a nurse on Cocos Island for 8 years prior to that and was one of the many people who fantasized about there being a cafe here. When expressions of interest were called for the lease of the disused Tourism/Museum building,I applied for and was successful in obtaining it. Finally, after 35 years of nursing, I found the courage to ditch the superannuation, holiday and sick pay associated with having a government job and ventured into the world of small business. It took Geof (my partner) and I four months of preparation to get the cafe ready for opening. We had lots of help from locals and visitors who were excited about there finally being a cafe on West Island. I called the cafe Dory's after my dory boat, and our logo is based on the John Dory fish.
